In an age when science has presumed to give definite answers, The Shaping Spirit asks vital questions about ourselves and our destiny. To the hard- lined scientist it will inevitably appear to be, in its seeming contempt for mere facts, romantic or escapist, but perhaps it is time for someone to speak up for the intuition, for enduring human values that cannot be weighed and measured by the engines of science. Dr. Adefope’s attempt to bridge the widening gap between science and religion is commendable in this highly stimulating synthesis by a passionate advocate of the primacy of intuitive knowledge.

In his new book, Dr. Adefope
provides a detailed account of the origin and purpose of human life. From the creation
of the Universe, he follows the evolution of our planet, tracing life from its very
beginning to the appearance of Homo sapiens. He then takes up the story of
human evolution, covering some of its greatest triumphs, as well as some of its
abysmal failures. These, Dr. Adefope claims, are a result of mankind’s inability
to recognise its true, spiritual origin; and the result is the social, environmental and
geopolitical chaos we see today, where theories abound of a universe created
without purpose, driven by blind chance. Dr. Adefope embraces the science of
both the Big Bang and evolution, claiming that they are a logical sequence of
events which are driven by a higher Will. That Will emanates from a being whose
‘otherness’ is only grasped by a few. This being is the Creator, whose Will acts
upon everything that exists, operating through the universal Cosmic Laws that
were woven into the fabric of the Cosmos from the beginning. The experiencing
of these Laws is testimony to His nearness in a metaphoric sense, so that
the proverbial ‘Letters from God’ can be found everywhere.
The book then discusses why ‘science’ does not, and cannot, come to the same
conclusions about a Creator. This is because science is limited to examining
only coarse matter, denying the existence of finer material planes and higher
connections. Such things do not fit into
the materialistic concepts that prevail today, not least because of mankind’s
denial of a spiritual heritage. Dr. Adefope delves into the challenging and quirky
field of quantum mechanics to illustrate his point; this area of science represents a
barrier to research that cannot be completely overcome unless there is a
total revision of the current position, namely the inclusion of the finer material
planes in the analysis. He also discusses the very nature of humanness
– of being human. Are we simply very highly developed apes? If not, in
what way do we differ from the beasts? Dr. Adefope identifies the fundamental
difference between humans and animals, pinpointing the inner core of humans,
which is ‘spirit’ in nature and which is imbued with free will. Free will is a great
privilege that was granted by the Creator, and to whom account must be rendered.
The Cosmic Laws, which uphold the entire Creation, have partly been discovered
and examined by scientists, yet these scientists are still largely unable, or unwilling,
to acknowledge the existence of a Law Giver. Dr. Adefope explores what lies behind
the narrow vision of scientific interpretation, by delving into the nature of intellect,
and its dominance over our intuitive faculties. Our ‘spirit’, he goes on
to explain, can only transmit its will by sending impulses from the solar plexus, a
complex network of nerves in the abdomen, to a part of our brain known as
the cerebellum. This intuitive part of our
brains, our ‘back’ brain, has become disproportionately
weak during the course of our evolution, essentially from lack of use,
so that it no longer asserts itself properly. The consequence is that virtually all the
decisions we make are arrived at using other parts of our brain, primarily the
cerebral or ‘frontal’ brain, which is the seat of our intellect. Thus too much of our
thinking relies on the intellectual part of our brain, which cannot evaluate matters
that transcend the physical realities of time and space. The human spirit has
therefore – by its own free will – deprived itself of a harmonious cerebrum–cerebellum
interface. In this inactive and undeveloped state, the spirit neglects the
very reason for its existence – that is, the development of a spiritually fully
conscious personality. This is fundamentally different from the ‘day-consciousness’
experienced by our intellects. Dr. Adefope concludes that it is the
spirit within us that ‘shapes’ our destiny, for better or for worse, because we reap
what we sow (not only in agriculture, but in all things). Positioned high above all of
this is the Creator, whose Will as the Creative Spirit provides the framework
within which our existence is played out, both in this world and in the ‘afterlife’,
through the unassailable Cosmic Laws that never change, and about which science
has very much more to discover. The cornerstone of The Shaping Spirit is
the knowledge found in the work In the Light of Truth – The Grail Message by
Abd-ru-shin (Oskar Ernst Bernhardt, 1875–1941). Dr. Adefope’s intention in
writing this book was not to ‘let his own light shine’ but to bring to as wide an audience
as possible the wealth of knowledge imparted in the Grail Message. Thus The
Shaping Spirit provides both a signpost to, and a preview of, the higher recognitions
attainable through study of that work. Throughout his book, Dr. Adefope’s
assertions are fully supported by hard
facts. This comes through a thorough understanding of many scientific disciplines
including anthropology, cosmology, biochemistry, genetics and classical and quantum
physics. Dr. Adefope skilfully presents all of this in a straightforward
manner, with no heavy jargon or incomprehensible phrases, so that it can be easily
understood by people with no scientific training, as long as they have an open
mind and a capacity for consequential thinking. By using everyday language, he
allows the reader to engage in a unique way with some ordinarily perplexing concepts.
