SHEPARD celebrated 60 years as an OPRY member last YEAR, after having been formally invited to join on her birthday, NOVEMBER 21st, 1955. SHEPARD rose to prominence at an early age after pairing with FERLIN HUSKY for 1953’s “A Dear JOHN Letter.” Included in her 45 charted Country singles across a three-decade career were, “Second Fiddle,” “Slippin’ Away,” “A Satisfied Mind,” GRAMMY nominated “Then He Touched Me,” and “The Tip Of My Fingers.” She became a mouthpiece for THE ASSOCIATION OF COUNTRY ENTERTAINERS (ACE) and was an advocate for fellow female artists.

Ryan Follese
Put A Label On It
(BMLG Records)
This song makes me smile, and here’s why: I know books are outdated these days, but bear with me – there’s nothing like a great story, one that captures you in that detail in the first line. Ryan got me with this: “You’ve been peeling back the label / On that long neck bottle / For ten minutes now, spit it out / You’ve been drinking up the courage / I’m watching your wheels turning / So just lay it out, what’s it about?” Like a great book, Country music is all about the narrative – so for those of you wondering if this former Pop sensation has what it takes to transition in to Country, the answer is yes. This song is a cute, honest, and relatable story about that awkward “what are we?” point in a relationship. It’s sweet (hence the smiling) and catchy – and up-tempo for your playlist! I can’t get the chorus out of my head, “So you tell your friends and I’ll tell mine / We both know it’s coming / It’s too hard to hide / Can’t wait for another minute / Let’s go and get it over with / Acting like it isn’t when we know it is / I think it’s time we define the relationship / You’re all that I ever wanted / Let’s go and put a label on it.” This song has the straightforward honesty that 23 year olds such as myself appreciate – for reference, it’s the same reason we love Taylor Swift so much. Maybe there’s something magical about going between Pop and Country formats. And back to my whole “books are outdated” thing – I really appreciate that Ryan likes books too – “I can read you like a book, girl / And we’re on the same page.” Just another reason to smile. I hope you smile, too, in your music meeting! |
