Available on iTunes Looking for America, written by Music Row veterans Bernie Nelson and Philip Douglas and rising star newcomer Jeremy Bussey, was a musical force of nature looking for the right home – which it soon found in Wills’ power house vocals.
The song takes an honest look at where we are as a nation and what we (as US citizens – not the politicians) need do to get the country back on track. By the time Mitzi Matlock, Nelson’s publisher, got the demo of Looking for America to Mark Wills, the song had already tested most favorably with different demographic groups all around the nation. Matlock says, “I was knocked out by the power of the song’s sincerity…I’d never heard these simple, honest sentiments expressed like this before. I didn’t have a choice – I had to find the right artist for this song and get it out to the public’.
Eventually Matlock decided her company, Mitzi Matlock Music/MM Publishing, would release the song – she then went straight to master producer Phil O’Donnell to produce the track. O’Donnell called his good buddy Dan Frizell at Legends Studio, to put together a band that included some of Nashville’s top session players.
Looking For America Lyrics
I’m chasing down a memory
Of the way that things used to be
Kids playing underneath an old street light
Knowing they were safe when they laid down at night
I’m looking for something I ain’t seen in a while
I’m looking for a factory
Where a man can feed his family
Not worried about them moving it South
Closing the doors and shut ‘er down tomorrow
I’m looking for America
Chorus
The land of the free and home of the brave
Seems like I just woke up one day
And it was gone, long gone
But I know in my heart is still out there
Can somebody please tell me where
I’m looking for America
I’m searching for an old church steeple
Where inside you find people
Who live their lives unashamed
And they ain’t afraid to say God’s name out loud
I’m looking for America
Chorus
I’m out here looking for the truth
A few folks to waive the red white and blue
Who still believe freedom isn’t free
And I guess is up to you and me to find it
Yeah we got to find it
Cause we’re looking for
Chorus
