Producer Tony Mantor has signed Bobby Brooks Wilson, son of legendary singer Jackie Wilson, to Plateau Music with plans to produce a project revisiting his father’s hits.
Jack Leroy “Jackie” Wilson, Jr. (June 9, 1934 – January 21, 1984) was an American singer and performer. Known as “Mr. Excitement”, Wilson was pivotal in the transition of rhythm and blues into soul. He was considered a master showman, one of the most dynamic and influential singers and performers in R&B and rock history. Gaining fame in his early years as a member of the R&B vocal group Billy Ward and His Dominoes, he went solo in 1957 and recorded over 50 hit singles that spanned R&B, pop, soul, doo-wop and easy listening. These hits include Higher and Higher, Lonely Teardrops, To Be Loved, and That’s Why. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
“I am very excited about this” says Bobby Brooks Wilson. “My team looked at several producers and we feel that Tony will bring great energy and excitement to this venture. His style of production and knowledge of the market, along with his successes at radio, will give us a very competitive edge.
When asked about the project, Mantor said that he not only plans to cover the hits with Bobby but will explore new material as well. The recent R&B revival in Pop and a resurgence of the Memphis influence in Country opens new vistas for this versatile artist. “We will retain the integrity of the classic songs while imparting contemporary production values. The addition of new material will give fans of Jackie Wilson the opportunity to hear their favorite songs recorded by his son, while introducing Bobby Brooks Wilson to a new, broader audience worldwide”.
Wilson maintains an active touring schedule. Recording is scheduled to commence in March.
