Hollywood, CA – September 8, 2011: The Hollywood Music In Media Awards (HMMA) announced today Smokey Robinson will be presented with the organization’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award during the main awards event on November 17th, 2011 in Hollywood, CA. Once hailed by Bob Dylan as “America’s greatest living poet,” the acclaimed singer-songwriter’s career spans over four decades of hits. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Robinson founded The Miracles while still in high school. He is famous for creating sweet, soulful sounds including: “Shop Around;” “Tears of a Clown;” and “I Second That Emotion.” In addition to writing and singing hits, Robinson also found prodigious success as a music executive; he became Vice President of Motown Records and produced numerous hits for other Motown greats including The Temptations, Marvin Gaye and Mary Wells. He later turned to a solo career where he triumphed with such hits as “Cruisin’,” “Quiet Storm” (which launched a music genre which persists to this day),” and “Just to See Her” and remained VP of Motown Records until the sale of the company to MCA in 1988. The crooner’s latest album, “Smokey Robinson Now & Then”, is receiving critical acclaim and doing brisk sales. Robinson continues to perform all over the world in front of adoring masses.
“We’re excited to honor this incredibly talented artist at our awards event!” exclaims HMMA executive producer Brent Harvey. “Not only is he a great artist, songwriter and respected music executive, he’s such a sweet and humble man. He is the embodiment of what the talented musicians affiliated with HMMA strive to become. His beloved music has been heard in so many films, TV shows and other visual mediums, the HMMA is proud to be the first to recognize that aspect of his career” concludes Harvey.
